Welcome to seventh grade English class!
Students will explore a broad spectrum of language arts and literature, beginning with a unit called “Tools for English Scholars” in which they’ll review the literary devices and structures good writers use. From there, we continue on to a mystery unit, followed by studies including Greek and world mythology, historical fiction, research, drama and more. Throughout the year, students will refine their skills as readers, writers, and critical thinkers through exposure to all genres of literature. Language arts study should be dynamic, so when possible, we’ll enrich our study of written texts with visual art, music, radio, and film.
Whereas early instruction in language arts emphasizes reading comprehension and identification of ideas, our goal is to move beyond the basics. Students will become discerning readers, skilled in literary analysis and criticism. Students will expand their writing beyond simple expression, striving to use specific writing tools purposefully and with a focus on audience.
Language is a powerful force in our lives! Students will learn about the complex, artistic relationships between language, literature, and culture – how we use language to both cause and respond to events in the world around us.
You can read and print a copy of the full course expectations below. Students will receive a hard copy to keep in their notebooks. You do not need to print one to bring to class.
